Childhood asthma: A diagnostic challenge in under-5 children

Asthma is defined as a chronic inflammatory disorder
of the airways and is associated with airway hyperresponsiveness
that leads to recurrent episodes of
wheeze, breathlessness, chest tightness and
cough.1,2,3 Asthma is a global health problem, with
an estimated 300 million affected individuals.1 In
Bangladesh about 7 million people (5.2% of the
population) including 4 million children (7.2% of all
children between 1- 15 years of age) are suffering
from asthma.4,5 About 50-80% of children who have
asthma, develop symptoms before their fifth birth day
with an earlier onset in males than females.3,6,7,8
