Congenital Haemolytic Anaemia: A Preventable Havoc of Bangadesh

Haemoglobinopathies & Thalassaemia are common variety of haemolytic anaemia throughout the world. These are the inherited genetic disorder of Haemoglobin and varies in different population groups in the world. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that at least 6.5% of the world populations are carriers of different inherited disorders of haemoglobin. Abnormal haemoglobin, called haemoglobin E which is quite common in Bangladesh has also world wide carriers of 53 millions1. A conservative World Health report estimates that 3% are carriers of â thalassaemia and 4% are carriers of Hb E in Bangladesh and affected birth per thousand of b thalassaemia is 0.106 & 0.300 of Hb E-β thalassaemia2
